I always want to stress out the importance of right nutrition. The biggest part of the secret of being healthy is the right healthy diet. And that’s for anyone, not just the ulcerative colitis patients. Your ulcerative colitis diet should ideally be personalized like I do with my clients. You should know that you don’t have much room to play around with your colitis diet. It should be strict, and it should be appropriate for you. You would probably want to break free from conventional diet concepts like cereal with orange juice in the morning if you want right colitis diet…Sorry, no more orange juice, at least not for a while.

Most doctors will tell you eat bananas, rice and crackers when you have the exacerbation of ulcerative colitis or just colitis symptoms.

I don’t argue anymore because it’s hard to convince a conventionally trained physician to change their mind. Even though I was able to change minds of a few strong minded physicians I recently stopped wasting my breath.

Bananas?? Bananas are full of sugar. Sugar is the perfect food for virus or infection. You want to starve that virus or bacteria from growing. Please, no sugar.

Rice?? For someone who has ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s there’s a high chance of narrowing of the intestine especially during flare up. Would rice be helpful here? Maybe properly cooked brown rice in small amount with properly added coconut oil, some steamed vegetables. Ok, that would be fine. But the doctor tells you to eat rice; you go and get non-organic genetically modified plain white rice, cook it without oil and eat it just like that. I’m not even going to consider that you got your rice from a Chinese take-out. Please, no white rice.

Crackers??? Ok, what kind of crackers? Oh, plain white crackers from the conventionally bleached flour that was bleached with the same bleach that you use for your laundry. Not to mention the fact that these crackers contain gluten. Gluten is the substance that is really not recommended for anyone with inflammatory digestive conditions. At least it’s not recommended by health practitioners that share the same beliefs like me.

If you have ulcerative colitis, you should know what foods trigger your symptoms. If not, get a log and right things down. Not kidding.

What is ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is a disease that affects the large intestine or the colon and the rectum. This disease causes inflammation of the colon's inner lining and the rectal wall, which becomes inflamed (red, swollen, and ulcerated).

  • dairy (if lactose intolerant, if not stay away at least for a few months)
  • foods containing sulfur ( dry fruits often covered with sulfur)
  • hot sauce, red hot pepper
  • popcorn
  • products containing sorbitol (sugar-free gum and candies)

Ulcerative Colitis Diet: Eating right ulcerative colitis diet is the first and most important step to healing. Nutrients are there to give us the strength. Food is not supposed to cause us pain. But with everything that has been done to the food in the past 100 years we need to adjust and we need to learn to refuse.

For example, if there was some blood loss and there’s are signs of slight anemia you should consider eating lots of baked apples, organic turkey liver, organic chicken livers, spinach, organic egg yolks, beans, collards, raisins and other healthful iron substitutes. This of course is not to be substituted for iron supplements if such are prescribed.

Ulcerative colitis diet - 5 rules

  1. Rule number one is to eat healthful protein. You need protein for strength. You need protein to repair your digestive tissues. The examples of great proteins are lamb, turkey, organic chicken, peas, beans, and wild caught fish. Try to avoid dairy products, especially if raw dairy is not available to your area.
  2. Rule number two: Eat lots of great, organic green vegetables.
  3. Rule number three: Organic fresh fruits are so great. They have vitamins and so many other great benefits BUT they have too much sugar in the form of fructose. Please limit these to two a day.
  4. Rule number four: Try to avoid starchy foods and sweets. They don’t have the necessary nutrients to feed your cells. Try thinking that “this will completely confuse my body” the next time you try to eat a piece of candy.
  5. Rule number five: Have sufficient amount of good oils like 3 tablespoonfuls daily in the salads, in your shake or in your smoothie. For example, one tablespoonful of extra virgin coconut oil in the morning shakes. One more tablespoonful of extra virgin olive oil in the salad for lunch. And one more tablespoonful of cold pressed flax seed oil in the green smoothie for a snack.
This ulcerative colitis diet will keep you satisfied, without craving during the day. It will keep your hormones in balance, your cholesterol at the good levels and you minus flare ups. Soy products are very controversial. I can’t really recommend many soy products except for fermented soy products like Tempeh.

Big Misconception of Ulcerative colitis diet.

You should know that raw foods should be big part of ulcerative colitis diet. Your body starves for raw foods. Raw foods should take up at least 50 % of your total food intake.

Raw vegetables, raw fruits, raw greens, raw nuts, raw dairy and even raw eggs are very healthful foods. And that’s the foods we were meant to eat. And most recommendation say to eat pureed and processed foods for ulcerative colitis. I understand that should be the case when there’s a major flare up. But when you are doing better, immediately return to a more raw foods in you colitis diet.

On the contrary of most physicians’ recommendations high-fiber green foods can be healing and anti-inflammatory. Sure, not when you suffer from diarrhea. Anti-inflammatory diet is what you also need to follow.

Colitis treatments should really have appropriate ulcerative colitis diet as part of the treatment plan. Unfortunately, traditional medicine is not focusing on preventative medicine now but that’s where Functional medicine comes in.

Ulcerative Colitis Diet: Some studies show benefits of supplementation with EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). It helps to inhibit leukotriene activity.
