Learn The Benefits Of Probiotics And Improve Your Digestive Health.
What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are beneficial micro-organisms that normally present in the human body.
Most of the probiotic supplements available in the stores have Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria bifidium as main ingredients. These naturally occur in the large intestine.
Now that you know what are probiotics, the next question comes in:
Why should you take probiotics?
There are many great reasons to take probiotics.
Unfortunately, our diet doesn’t have enough probiotics unless you only consume homemade and raw kefirs, yogurts and fermented vegetables and nothing else. Most yogurts on the shelves do not have sufficient amounts of viable bacteria to be therapeutically effective.
Most pickled products and fermented foods sold in the stores have that sour taste due to added vinegar instead of naturally lactic acid producing bacteria. You may think that you are buying a health food product while it's another gimmick.
As a pharmacist I encourage many patients to take probiotics. And not only those patients that just had prolonged antibiotic therapy. Many, many patients have that gut flora disbalance which desperately needs to be addressed.
Most people think that probiotics are only for digestive health. That’s a really outdated mentality. Probiotics are great for immune system, colon health, respiratory health, skin health and much more.
Probiotic activity starts in the mouth, where S. salivarius K12 lives. People that have less throat infections seem to have more S. salivarius K12. The same S.salivarius K12 has an ability to fight inflammation.
Another probiotic found in the mouth called S. salivarius M18 would prevent cavities and reduce plaque buildup.
Probiotics are essential because they dilute and displace bad bacteria like salmonella, E.coli and clostridium that make people very sick. It’s an important benefit of probiotics.
Enzymes secreted by probiotic bacteria improve digestion and nutrient utilization.
The lower small intestine, where it connects to the large intestine (commonly affected in Crohn’s disease) carries probiotics called Lactobacillus sporogenes or Bacillus coagulans.
This particular naturally occurring probiotic has shown the ability to fight destructive free radicals, which is the mechanism for cancer prevention.
Are there any Crohns Disease probiotics? Some companies can market their products as "Crohns Disease Probiotics". Don't believe the hype. You do require specifically formulated and high potency probiotics for Crohns, but just like with Crohns Disease Diet , it's more individual.
Probiotics also help with nutrient absorption and converting vitamins and minerals.
Probiotics help protect the mucosal barrier of the digestive tract and inhibit the growth of bad bacteria.
Probiotics are especially helpful for Candida overgrowth that is common with vaginal and yeast infections.
Some studies even suggest that probiotics could potentially help with the weight loss.

Probiotics are used for diarrhea and
constipation because they balance out the intestinal flora.
If you would like to make your own kefir that is naturally loaded with good bacteria, great probiotics you can learn about it or purchase kefir starter kit.
Probiotics Benefits – Probiotics Are Great For Immune System:
Now, patients having any type of digestive disorder including Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Celiac and IBS PAY ATTENTION:
Almost 80 percent of all immune cells in our bodies LIVE within intestines, where they fight off the harmful bacteria. Probiotics won’t just help these immune cells stimulate the immune reaction but also help cool down an over-reactive immune system’s response.
What does that mean?
If autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis have that over-reactive immune response and there are probiotics that can in fact cool down that “over-reactivity” why won’t we all take them? Good question. “Not enough supportive studies” as my doctor once said. “Well, look at more current studies doctors”, I say. Read Journal Of Gastrointestinal Surgery 7/09, Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology 11/08 and 12/08, Journal of Medical Microbiology 5/09 and many more to prove the point.
Well, I have Crohn’s disease and I successfully take probiotics for years. With other natural supplements, of course.

What are the probiotics side effects?
There are no serious reported side effects with probiotics. Again, not many studies are available on probiotics. From my professional experience as a pharmacist, the one of probiotics side effects that I can remember is some constipation. But constipation occurs in patients taking large doses of probiotics and they were prone to constipation to begin with.
Antibiotics and Probiotics – Who is Going To Win?
Anibiotics kill the bad bacteria together with beneficial one. This could cause diarrhea, stomach pains, irregularity, etc. The use of probiotics in this case is proven and finally recognized by conventional doctors. When taking antibiotics, consider spacing from probiotics by at least two hours.
It’s best to look for a quality probiotic with enough live organisms to be effective. Many of great quality probiotics will require refrigeration, but not all.
So many reasons to take probiotics, are you convinced yet? From my personal and professional experience I have seen most if not all of the patients benefit form probiotics.
