Unfortunately, adrenal health doesn’t get enough attention.

Adrenal health is so important for many vital functions of the body.

The adrenals are very important as part of our stress response as well as the balance of female and male sex hormones.

Adrenal glands physiologically located atop the kidneys.

Adrenal glands are responsible for making hormones which regulate blood pressure, cardiovascular health and the metabolism of the nutrients like carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

If adrenals are responsible for so many important functions why wouldn't most physicians address the adrenal function health?

Doesn't make sense? Right?

What would affect the adrenals tremendously, causing adrenal gland fatigue?

The answer is: Constant chronic stress on the body would cause adrenal fatigue.

Adrenal Gland Fatigue.

The problem is how people precept chronic stress. Most people tell me that chronic stress is the stress from their job or family. Actually, it’s much more than that:

Causes Of Adrenal Fatigue

  • Dietary Stress (poor quality food; food you are allergic to and don’t know it; diet not for your particular nutritional type).
  • Work Related Stress (job related hours and activities, even unusual working hours, like working nights vs. days can cause tremendous stress).
  • Environmental and chemical stress (environmental toxins, drugs, heavy metals, pollutants and contaminated water as well as job hazards like working with paints and heavy dust).
  • Gastrointestinal stress (you REALLY may not be aware of the pathogens that you have in your gut, you may be surprised what's there, contact me here to find out).
  • The way you handle stressful situations (you may want to look into stress management, Yoga, relaxation excercises).
  • Lack of sleep may be a major stressor on the body.
  • Skipping meals can be a major stressor for your system.
  • Too much or too little exercise can play a major role here too.
  • Physical stress from injuries can be a major stressor.

Adrenal Gland Fatigue:

Chronic, unmanaged stress puts the body into chronic adrenal exhaustion.  Adrenal exhaustion is that inability of our body to have a normal stress response or inability to maintain normal fight or flight effect.

Normal stress response would be when the body makes just enough cortisol depending on the time of the day and depending on the situation.  Normal sress response does not make you tired.  Being tired CAN BE FIXED most of the time, but not always.  Don't wait until it's too late, consider Functional medicine natural method.

Adrenal gland fatigue or adrenal fatigue may cause sugar imbalances, mood swings, weight gain, chronic inflammation and gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn’s disease, for example.  And then other signs of adrenal dysfunction show up.

Signs and Symptoms Of Adrenal Gland Fatigue
Adrenal Dysfunction:

  • Depression. Your body's brain chemicals are all "confused" now and there's not enough serotonin made.
  • Back/Neck Pain. That's another neurological reaction to chronic stress.
  • Indigestion. Not enough serotonin can in fact have an effect on gastrin production.  We need to get to the bottom of this.
  • Excessive Fatigue. Chronic stress from any source can transform into chronic excessive fatigue.
  • Hair Loss. Certain chronic vitamin deficiencies or gut flora disbalance form chronic stress can be the causes here.  We have to find out the cause.
  • Dizziness. This could be a direct or delayed reaction to stress.  It can be fixed as long as we know the root of the problem.
  • Anxiety. When anxiety is untreated or treated with conventional medications it gets more difficult to heal with Functional method, but not completely impossible.
  • Inappropriate Immune Response. That's where people get sick with all the viruses, flu, colds and bacterial infections all the time.
  • Irritability. You get tired, you get cranky.  We can work on this problem from the root cause of it.
  • Insomnia. Insomnia is a complex condition that needs to be looked at from different angles.  The key here is to have a health care practitioner that wants to listen and to find out one or more causes of your insomnia.
  • Lack Of Concentration. That’s very common when adrenal gland fatigue is due to dietary stress.  When your diet is individually corrected then the problem is fixed most of the time.
  • Food Allergies. That's a big one.  So many people have allergies to foods, gluten or milk and don't want to address it.  Functional medicine looks into this as a part of the healing wellness plan.
  • Headaches. Back to brain chemicals.  We need to go to the root cause of one or more problems to fix it.
  • Sweets Or Salt Cravings. Food carvings are part of food addiction and inadequate stress response.
  • Dry Skin. This can be from direct dehydration as well as from allergic reaction to foods, environment or toxins at home.
  • Memory Problems. When the system is out of balance, the most common reaction of the brain is to "rest".  Adrenal gland fatigue is also a "fatigue of the brain".
  • And others

So without the right balance, your body starts going into adrenal burnout or adrenal gland fatigue and often not enough or too much cortisol is made in your system.

Cortisol, the “stress hormone,” directs the production of special immune cells called immunocytes, your first line immune defense.  If the values of cortisol are abnormal, the ability of immune cells to produce great immune response is compromised.

This is the reason you get sick so easily when you are stressed.  Chronic stress leads to adrenal exhaustion then to depressed immunity.

When our first line immune system defense is depressed, it opens the door for opportunistic infections.

Cortisol or glucocortisol receptors are found in almost every cell in the body.

Cortisol is that “feel good” hormone.  You need cortisol for all basic bodily functions.  Cortisol or glucocortisol receptors are found in almost every cell in the body.

When adrenal fatigue or chronic stress response has gone too far, chronic illnesses or chronic conditions may often start:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Increased Drug Sensitivities
  • Infertility
  • Menstrual Irregularities
  • Autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s disease
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Gastrointestinal Diseases like IBS, Celiac disease, Acid Reflux, etc
  • Inflammatory Diseases like Arthritis
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Psychiatric Problems
  • And many others

Avoid Adrenal Gland Fatigue

There are a few stages of adrenal exhaustion and when you get to the last stage of it you are REALLY exhausted.

If your cortisol levels are really low you are most likely at the last stage and you are so tired.

Don’t wait for that to happen.

Don’t wait for a complete adrenal gland fatigue when your adrenals are totally burned out.  You can get your adrenals checked just by doing saliva test at home.  It’s really simple and very inexpensive.  Contact me for more information on the contact form below or go here to make an appointment on the phone.

5 Great Tips To Avoid Adrenal Gland Fatigue:

  1. Try avoiding stimulants like caffeine, late night exercise, chocolate and other supplements that can excite your body.  Get to bed at 10pm.
  2. Stabilize your sugar.  Don’t eat refined sugars, too much fruits or even honey.  Avoid sugar completely if possible.
  3. Avoid starchy carbohydrates or limit them to a very low amount.  Something like one to two slices of whole grain bread a day.  That’s it.
  4. Do some de-stressing.  Do Yoga, breathing exercises or stretching to unwind.  These are great when you want to avoid adrenal gland fatigue.
  5. Re-colonize your gut flora with great quality probiotics and try digestive enzymes if you have any digestive issues.

I wish you great health!
