Being a pharmacist I have been asked about benefits of vitamin C so many times that I probably should have recorded my answers and replayed them over and over.

Would vitamin C be good for Crohn’s disease, IBS, ulcerative colitis, Celiac disease or other chronic diseases? Many patients are concerned that vitamin C could be irritating to the gastro intestinal lining and cause upset stomach. Many patients are concerned that vitamin C could worsen their acid reflux disease. Is that so?

So what are Vitamin C Facts?

  1. When we are under stress our system requires much more vitamin C than the average daily recommended dose of 60mg a day.
  2. Vitamins are necessary for the biochemical reactions in our body. They are needed for our system to function properly.
  3. Vitamin deficiencies are associated with many diseases and health problems. Some vitamin deficiency related health issues are easier to fix than others. It gets more difficult to treat a health problem when certain vitamin deficiencies go untreated for a long period of time and lead to chronic diseases.
  4. It’s important to eat right for your metabolic type. But it’s very hard to make sure that you take in enough daily vitamins with your diet.
  5. Human body is designed in such a way that it could not make its own vitamin C. Interesting fact is that most animals are able to make their own vitamin C, it’s not even a vitamin for them. Humans need to absorb vitamin C with our food. Human body has trouble storing vitamin C so we need to constantly replenish vitamin C supply.

Importance Of Vitamin C.

The importance of vitamin C can’t be stressed out enough. It’s a powerful antioxidant, relatively inexpensive and pretty effective.

The importance of vitamin C (or as ascorbic acid) was recognized by many studies. Vitamin C is important for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues.

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is involved in many body functions, including collagen formation, iron absorption, the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of teeth, bones and cartilages.

Water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C must be continuously supplied in the diet to maintain healthy levels. You need to eat vitamin-C rich fruits and vegetables. It’s best to eat them raw (uncooked), or cook them with minimal water (like in the pressure cooker) so you don't lose some of the water-soluble vitamins in the cooking water.

Deficiency of vitamin C is very rare now. Vitamin C deficiency is mostly seen in malnourished adults. In very rare cases this vitamin C deficiency could lead to scurvy (gum bleeding, anemia, bruising, etc).

Vitamin C is a precursor to glutathione , one of the body’s most important antioxidants.
