It's so pleasurable! Isn't it? It’s so bad for you! It can't be! It relaxes me so much! But why? I am so addicted to it that I can’t quit!?



I was puffing away all through college and always felt guilty about it. I felt even worse when I got diagnosed with Crohns disease, thinking that I caused my condition with nicotine addiction.

Possible Causes of Crohns disease.. But going through the literature and the studies I realized that there is so much more to Crohns disease and the actual cause is still unknown. So what are the facts?

IBD. It has been studied and proven with research that there is a connection between nicotine addiction and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Two common types of IBDs are Crohns disease and Ulcerative colitis. Tobacco addiction may have opposite effects between Ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease. It may have a negative effect on Crohns disease and a positive effect on Ulcerative colitis. This still seems confusing to the medical world. Also, no one really knows exactly how this habit may cause such a response in IBD patients. The theory is that nicotine somehow affects the smooth muscles inside the colon, and alters the gut motility(the rate at which contents move through the colon).

Most of the studies suggest that you should stop this habit, but some would have an opposing theory. Dr. William Campbell Douglass is one to suggest that it’s OK to use tobacco in moderate amounts and that it has positive effects on your health. He explains that tobacco is so good for you. Go figure? I personally quit the habit years ago and I’m happy that I did. Nasty breath, smelly hands and clothes are all part of the past. I’m sure I have improved my health by quitting the habit. Smoking is associated with many other health problems and should not be debated as being pro health.

Smoking and Crohns disease. Smokers are three times more likely to develop Crohns disease. Most studies will prove over and over again that this habit is really terrible for you. It’s proven to worsen Crohns patient’s symptoms and quaility of life. Ulcerative colitis patients that are smokers have fewer symptoms. But the study with Ulcerative colitis patients using a nicotine patch was inconclusive because the patch did not help them stay in remission (inactive stage of disease). Still, the researchers are probing the idea of nicotine and its possible positive effects.

Smoking Diseases: Negative effects. According to most medical literature you, really, should quit this habit. But this is entirely your decision because I believe that negative effects of smoking vary individually. If, and when, you decide to quit nicotine addiction, start with a more natural approach without the use of pharmaceutical drugs.

That's why it's so hard to quit. But be clear on the fact that its risk outweights any unproven benefits. They have an increased number of repeat surgeries and aggressive pharmacological treatment with immunosuppressant agents that have many side effects of their own.

Your health will improve and your children will most likely be healthier when you quit. This is scientifically proven. Your finances will thank you. Your family will love you. You won’t need to go outside in the freezing rain to have a few puffs. YOU could be free from this dependence! Start working on psychological dependance before physical dependance.
  • If you prefer traditional medicine, then your doctor can offer a variety of choices. They may include antidepressants, Chantix, nicotine patches, nicotine gum, etc. Some people do very well with these products. It’s also important to have a good support system. Ask your smoker friends and family to be considerate and not to do it in front of you.
  • Consider trying Tapping techniques to quit tobacco addiction. This can be very simple and cost-effective.
  • Acupuncture is a one of the natural remedies to help people quit the habit. Acupuncture can be great for Crohns colitis in general and also beneficial for quitting nicotine addiction. Educating yourself on smoking cessation in addition to acupuncture will increase the chances of winning the battle against cigarettes.


  • Studies were inconclusive about hypnotherapy as a smoking cessation treatment. But some studies show that hypnotherapy is somewhat beneficial.


  • Many herbal preparations for this purpose are now available on the market. They mostly contain herbs that have calming effects and herbs that mimic antidepressant medications. Most common ingredients in such herbal products are St. Johns wort, Lobelia, ginseng, etc. Some of them work very well. They work even better in combination with the support of a professional psychologist or behavioral therapist. Watch for drug interactions with these preparations. If you take blood pressure medications, heart medication, Warfarin, etc., you need to discuss this with a medical professional to avoid interactions.






Smoking diseases or toxic environment? You need to remember that our bodies are pretty toxic nowdays. You can imagine how much more toxic they are with the help of cigarettes.
