Difference Between Crohn's Disease And Ulcerative Colitis?

by Leona

How would doctors differentiate Crohn's disease from ulcerative colitis? It's confusing. They are both IBDs, right? Thanks, your info is great.

Budenofalk and pregnancy

Hi!
I was diagnosed with crohn's in 2004 and had one flare-up after another and had long treatment with steriods. I hadn't had a flare-up since last June (over a year). We had been planning a pregnancy but now another flare-up has started. My doctor has prescribed Budenofalk. Has anyone taken this when pregnant? I so wanted to be medication-free when trying to get pregnant but the diarrhoea and stomach pain are getting worse, so I have to nip it in the bud before i get a full flare-up...I would be interested to hear from anyone who has been or is on this medication...can I still try to get pregnant? It says on the packet should be avoided but I have read on the Internet lots of people take it when pregnant...

Thanks

Kirsty

Am I developing Crohn's disease or is it just a coinsidence?

by Steven

Hello,

I will start off by telling you that I am 17 (almost 18) years old and that I have taken the drug Accutane approximately 2-3 years ago, which is why I have the reason to believe that I may be developing Crohns disease.

My symptoms are very limited and include a fairly recent development of intolerance to lactose, and what I think is a skin tag near my anus (both which I've read are symptoms of the disease.)

I've never experienced any abdominal pain (except for when I'm just getting up in the morning, but I think that is due to holding in my urine for to long and is relieved when I urinate.) I've also never experienced any severe diarrhea, blood in my stool, or fever. But the two symptoms I have mentioned are kind of worrying me. Are they symptoms of Crohns disease or are they just coincidences?

Thank you for your time and I hope you can help me out.

Diagnosis

by Sam
(Boise, Idaho)

My name is Sam...

History: I have been to my Doctor recently with the following symptoms : Bleeding with every bowel move (for two weeks), Loss of weight 10 -15 Lbs, Severe pain at times in Right side just above hip, skin sores arms and legs, pain with bowel movement.

Blood results were elevated White blood cell count. I also recently had a colonoscopy 2nd one for same issues different time periods (6 yrs). The Biopsy did not show anything, Crohn's was mentioned though since there was noticeable inflammation and Blood in Colon/small intestine in latest colonoscopy.

I’m 24 years old and have had Kidney stones since age 12 I was wondering what, if any, of these are accurate with Crohn's disease?

I have done a lot of research since Crohn's was mentioned after my Colonoscopy. Is there anything else I should look out for?

Should I get a second opinion to diagnose this? I’m not sure why I haven’t found any answer of what is wrong.

13 year old daughter diagnosed with Crohns last year

by Patti Laroe
(Georgia, Vt)

Little success with anti inflammatory drug Lialda for 1 year.

Symptoms improved but not gone. We did not take the suggestion of trying suppository or enema based on her fear of this entire diagnosis & side effects of possible drugs that will need to be used.

Have added Nopalea juice & Culturelle probiotic to her diet on our own, with some mild improvement.

Having a hard time finding any alternative treatments with less harsh side effects in the long term. Fearful these drugs at such an early age for the duration of her life will be extrememly damaging.

Hard age to have to deal with this when self image is so important.

Any helpful information would be soo appreciative, as our GI not very open to anything other than typical drugs and in fact told us she did not have to alter her diet.

Does Crohn change location over time?

I have been diagnosed with Crohn's colitis. I only had colonoscopy and terminal ileum was clear. Only colitis in Sigmoid colon. Symptom was bleeding only. BM once or twice a day and very formed. So my question is will crohn be in illeum or somewhere else too? Or it will just stay in colon only.

Wellness Coaching for Crohn's in New York and other places?

by Gerard
(New York City)

I live in New York and my son studies in a different state. He has Crohn's disease. But he wouldn't be coming here for a few years.

I read many great things about you and Functional medicine. Very interested in wellness coaching for my son.

Would you actually have to physically see him the first time?

Would you be able to do it on the phone or online?

Would you think that this program can work without stopping traditional meedications like Pentasa?

Would he have to be on a certain diet?

Thank you very much for this great and informative site! It's so rare to have a person being passionate about helping others.

Joint Pain And Stiffness After Crohn's Surgery

by Lynn
(NJ)

Hi, I had bowel resection in Jan 2010 and am living with temp ileostomy.

Several wks after surgery, I developed knee pain and overall severe joint stiffness. I had been on Humira, Entocort, Prednisone before surgery.

After many inconclusive blood tests, went to see a 3rd rheumotologist associated with a top Philly hospital.

She wants me to try Sulfasalazine instead of current Pentasa, or add Plaquenil to Pentasa. I am not comfortable with either!! Scary!

Additionally, I have to treat this Osteoporosis that I have. She said to start Reclast. Upon reading, it says to tell doctor if one has ever had small intestine sections removed or anemia.

That was a red flag for me. Last year my hemoglobin was 5.4 Had many many iron infusions.

Now, 6 months after surgery, hemoglobin is 13.8!
Thoughts on all this?? In the past I have tried acupuncture and alternative supplements for Crohn's with no results.

I currently eat gluten free, dairy free, and soy free.

Thanks for any feedback.

Crohn's Disease

Hello,
I have Crohn's Disease and I take Dipentum. I take 250mg 2 of them twice daily. I also take ferrous sulfate cause I am currently anemic.

I take these everyday...
multivitamin
calcium
vitamin d3
vitamin b complex
fish oil
coconut oil
vitamin c
garlic
probiotics
papaya enzyme

I am getting started on prebiotics soon too.

Would it be a good idea to start taking Omega 3-6-9 tablets daily too? I have been wanting to give them a try since I heard there are more benifits then just taking only plain fish oil.

Please let me know if everything I am taking sounds like it should work good on my Crohn's Disease?

Let me know if there are any herbs or supplements I should ask my doctor about if it would be safe for me to take? I plan on later on going to a natural doctor for my Crohn's but I need to follow up with on my regular doctor soon first.

Thanks!

Crohns Disease Probiotics

by Anonymous

I have Crohn's disease, and am curious what the best probiotic supplement for me would be.

I would like something with approximately 10 billion active cells with a wider range of different strains.

I am lactose-intolerant as well, so it cannot be in a lactose base.

And what's the deal with FOS? Is it bad for everyone, or just people with Crohn's? What is it exactly?

Thank you very much!

Sharp Toe and Calf Pain with Crohn's

When I have this sharp pain it deforms my toe and paralyzes it. The same with my calf's.

Could this be linked to my Crohns Disease?

Is this Chrons 20 yr old

by Andrea
(Buroff)

I have seen two doctors and one almost certain that I have Crohns and the other says that I don't.

I have been having stomach troubles for a few years now such as nausea and dry heaving after waking up in the morning along with a lack of appetite and irregular bowel movements.

Have had some blood tests and tests which came out inconclusive.

My mother and her family all have Chrons. my physician is convinced I have chrons. I got sent to a GI and he was very rude and said that i was over reacting and it was because I was fat and if I lost weight then I would be better.

What do I do? And who do I believe?

Could it have been my Crohn's all along?

I am a 24 year old Female whose life has been completely altered since April of this year.

Out of the blue I began having fast heart beats, loss of appetite, clammy hands/feet, major headaches, feeling completely out of it, and feeling numbness in different parts of my body.

I have seen so many specialists for my sinus tachycardia which has gotten to about 180 a few times.

The 5 week heart monitor and all echocardiograms/ekgs have come back normal. I have seen about 6 specialists and have had extensive tests and blood work run ups and the only thing that has come back abnormal is: Lungs-but said it looked like scarring from pneumonia earlier in the year & a recent CT-scan of abdomen/pelvis showed possible inflammation in my terminal ileum where my Crohn's was found 13 years ago.

I am now on my second gastroenterologist now at Mayo Clinic and will be having a colonoscopy/endoscopy next week with bravo. All blood work has come back normal but for some reason my body has not been keeping fluids and I have been told to increase salt intake as well as fluids. I also have been having flu-like symptoms coming around very couple of weeks.

Do you think that this inflammation in my ileum could possibly be the cause of all of these "weird" symptoms that I have been having since April? Could by chance the Crohn's lead to the sinus tachycardia that I have been experiencing?

perianal abcesses?

by Jess
(Oregon)

I'm a 23 year old young woman with a very debilitating case of Crohns Disease.

I've had several operations, tried EVERY medication, which helped here and there, but I have not been making any progress.

A development in the last several years has been what are called perianal(spelling?) abscesses; and none of my doctors have much, if any, clue on how to resolve the problem. I'm miserable; cannot work, cannot go to school; basically don't have a life.

I'm asking if you have heard of the abscesses and fistulas associated with Crohns. If you know of any one that have had these issues and come out of them.

I am about to undergo a major surgery to remove the rest of my diseased bowel in hopes it will help, but I don't want to go through it if there's something else I can do.

Thank you for your time in reading my long-winded question. I am desperate for resolution. Please respond.

--Hope for young with Crohn's

by Wendy Bauer
(Brockton, MA. USA)

Hello, My name is Wendy.

I am 51 and was diagnosed with Crohn's thirty years ago. I was 21. At the age of nearly 31 I had to my first major surgery where they remove my anus, rectum, large intestines and a couple inches of smell intestines and gave me an ileostomy. Just shy of a year they had to go back in and remove more small intestine so now I have lost eight inches of it.

After all this and not dating much I met my now husband almost 11 years ago. At the ripe young age of 44 I gave birth to, though 6 weeks early, very healthy identical twin girls!!!

I have been on Remicaide for over two years now and it has worked wonders with the Crohn's. I asked to have my ileostomy. My Crohn's was so bad I could no longer stand it. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

If you are told it is time for one do not be devistated. You will not believe how good you will feel afterwards and I have told most people I know about mine in such a matter of fact way they act like I told them I had something a common as allergies!!

I am very sad every time I hear some one else finds they have it. I pray for all of us that a cure is found very soon.
Try to keep a positive out look and take care.

Cured my Crohn's disease?

by Sandra
(Texas)

Hi everybody, I have been dealing with Crohns Disease for over 5years.

The pain and discomfort caused by this hideous disease destroyed my life. I have gone through two bowel resections and numerous emergency room and hospital visits over the years.

During the first twenty years of this disease, Prednisone and Sulfasalazine were the main treatment. Later Antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin or Metronidazole), Corticosteroids, 6-Mercaptopurine (6-MP), Methotrexate, and Cyclosporine when I ended up in emergency rooms.

Which happened more than I can remember. None of these worked as the Prednisone did. I eventually started receiving Remicade treatments that helped with the fistulas for a while. This was temporary and I had to go back every 6 weeks. In 2007 , the disease flared-up and consumed me. I was found in bed un-responsive and rush to the hospital in an ambulance.

I spent three days on life support and stayed in the hospital for approximately 35 days. During this time, they were not able to get control of the disease and I experienced my second bowel resection. I never recovered. After the surgery, I got worse. The pain returned and got worse, and I developed a new symptom of rashes all over my skin.

The pain stayed at a level 10 and was now 24 hours. My bowel frequency was unparalleled to anything I had experience in all the years of harboring this disease.

In September of 2010 , my roommate approached me and told me she met someone whose grandchild had Crohns disease. He had come across a practitioner that pioneered in Functional medicine and got to the root of the problem. I responded that I did not want help and really, as if I need another miracle in my life as I rolled my proverbial eyes.

Through the years, I had tried everything. I made my own food. I ate different diets. I tried those miracle cures. At every corner through the years was the ultimate miracle that resulted in yet another disappointment. With her insistence, I contacted this individual and when we talked I felt there was no way I wanted anything to do with this. Therefore,I followed all his instructions and did all the recommended labs.

Four weeks after, the pain started disappearing and I was able to sleep through most of the night. The frequency went down and I was able to sleep through the night within a week of Functional medicine protocol. Today I am not totally symptom free and there are some resemblances of the disease present at times.

However, I lost my ileum in the first bowel resection and bile can be an issue if I do not watch my diet. For the most part, I live a productive, happy symptom free life. In my heart, I know the disease is gone. I feel that after 6 years of pain and everything else that comes with Crohns disease there is a body and cellular memory.

It's really great that there are more Functional medicine practitioners like Inna that focus on Crohn's disease and can understand the pain we deal with.

There is hope for people out there.

In need of a pediatric crohn's daily nutrition shake

by Debbie
(Lake Stevens, WA)

My 11 1/2 year old has crohn's, and has not grown or gained weight for 7 months...of course this is a problem! Her weight is okay for her heighth.

She has a huge appetite, but her inflammation is not completely under control. She is feeling pretty good, with color in her cheeks and taking azathioprine-though the doctor may be wanting to move her to something stronger.,,

We are against that right now, Crohn's generally isn't fatal, but Remicade (for example) could cause fatal reactions. We think this medicine should be saved as a last resort, if she was feeling terrible, and she isn't (as she was when first diagnosed in November 2010). She was anemic, mouth full of sores, weight loss, no energy.

I'm looking for a protein type shake that is formulated with vitamins and iron that will help her to get taller, and reach puberty-glutamine or omega 3 would be good as well.

I'm surprised there aren't more specified shakes for IBD on the market, there are massive for weight lifting.

She has had to drink ensures for liquid diets, but now as a supplement, they make her nauseated, plus they are constipating. I'd like to find a powder that I can mix with juice or yogurt and fruit to make it tasty for her...

Any ideas? Your comments are very much appreciated!
Debbie

Crohns Acting Up

by Mindy
(Phoenix, AZ)

Hi,

I am desperate for help. My crohns has been acting up since october. I have a very high stress life right now--divorce and two deaths in my family in the last six months....plus 2 toddlers--with little to no help.

I eat very carefully but nothing seems to help. I have been taking prednisone since october and hate it. Right now I am on 40mg--dropped from 60mg. I am also taking my third dose of Humira on Tuesday--I don't really see it working yet.
I also take Miralax daily.

My diet consists of LOTS of tea (chamomille, decaf black tea), peanut butter (smooth), bananas, eggs, tuna and other fish, honey, white bread (which my dr told me to eat), white rice, canned veggie like spinach and cream of wheat.

I have basically eating like this for months! and still not a lot of improvement. Normally, I try to eat healthier--I dont eat red meat, chicken, or pork.

My dr said she does not understand why I feel so bad. I had a colonoscopy last January and my Crohns was virtually non-existent. And she did a CT scan a few weeks back and said that there is a stricture--but its not that narrow and should not be causing me all the pain I am having. She thinks I may have a combo of IBS and crohns because of my symptoms.

If there is any advice you could offer--it would be greatly appreciated! I am so tired, stressed out, hungry, and in pain almost all the time!!

Thanks,
Mindy

Feel sick all the time and the 5ASA screwed up my iron really bad on top of the horrible reaction.

Any answers?

postoperative crohns treatment

I've had Crohns for 30+ years and just had my first surgery at age 51.

I had partial blockage and 2 fistula.

My new Crohns specialist suggests Remicade to avoid fistula's from coming back.

What are your thoughts on Remicade and/or other options?

Thanks
AJ

Rate Of Fracture Healing With Crohn's Disease

by Kathy
(Florida)

I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease about 20 years ago and initially I was on large dose of steroids to get it under control.

I am on maintenance dose 2400 mg. of Asacol
and have been in remission. Recently I suffered a veretbrae compression fracture and healing has been very slow, about 6 months.

Does having Crohn's disease make fractures heal
at a slower rate and has any research been done on this?

Thanks KCrotty
