CONTROLLING DIARREAH-CROHN'S DISEASE
My name is Dan. I am 65 years old. Crohn's started at age 13. 52 years living with Crohn's disease. I had multiple surgeries (resections). Now have short small bowel only 5 feet after my last resection in 1996. I cannot have anymore resections. I was having average 10-12 bowel movements per day after surgery. Sudden urgent movements had to be within 5-10 minutes. My condition left me home-bound 95% of the time. If I had to drive, had to not eat or drink 2 hours before leaving house.
Then in 2009 an assistant doctor with my regular GI suggested codeine to reduce number of bowel movements. Started with 15 mg twice a day, bowel movements reduced to 5-7 per day. In 2010 Increased codeine to 30 mg twice per day. Bowel movements decreased to 4 per day. The urgency is now gone. I can travel and drive again without having to know where a toilet is readily available on short notice.
Codeine has been a life saver for me. I am no longer house-bound. codeine may not be for every one with crohn's disease. If you have more than 5-6 bowel movements per day with urgency you may ask/discuss your GI about trying codeine.
I am sharing this in case it may help some one else in the same situation.
