Colonoscopy Prep

by Phyllis
(Tennessee)

I have had 3 colonoscopys since December 2010. Each and every time, my colon has not been clear enough for my GI doc to be satisfied. She has removed polyps now all three times...which is new for me. I have had UC since 1995.

I stop eating solid foods 3-4 days prior to procedure and this last time, used GoLytely one day, Miralax the next day and 2 Fleet enamas the day before the procedure and still I am not clear enough. Can you please help me?! I am not sure how many more times I can do this.

While the polyps have been benign each time, my doc is fairly certain they will become cancerous if not removed so she wants to continue until she can see all of my colon.

What choice do I have?? But any suggestions on better prep will be very much appreciated!

Day Before Prep

by Bonnie

Why can't you have milk the day before colonoscopy?

My husband read the directions wrong and had cereal this a.m. and his test is tomorrow.

He already took his pill for it.

colonoscopy-diet before

I was put on a "low residue diet" 1 week before my colonoscopy and ended up very constipated that whole week.

I did not take any laxatives as my instruction sheet advised not to do this. How can I avoid this the next time?

I have other questions, too. I am 5' 4" and 138 lbs., was given 5mg Versed for an anesthetic, and remembered nothing of what the doctor told me after the procedure and little to nothing from the time they wheeled me into the procedure room (8:30am) until about 11:00pm at night. Is this normal? I was told I wouldn't remember the procedure and I might be a bit drowsy after, but not that I wouldn't remember the rest of the day.

Also, my husband was given Propofol instead of Versed and had a much better reaction. He was able to remember everything for the whole day afterwards. I was also very nauseated, weak, and dizzy for 2 days after the procedure to the point I had to cancel other appointments. My husband had none of this. Why isn't this drug offered to more people?

I understand that an anesthesiologist must administer Propofol. Shouldn't there be an anesthesiologist there in the GI lab for this and/or any emergencies that may occur? And further, how can a doctor ethically explain test results to a patient who has been given an anesthetic with amnestic properties?

It shouldn't matter whether the patient has some one responsible with him/her. The person with the colonoscopy patient may not get the info given by the doctor correct or hear things differently. How do these doctors get away with this and not have other patients pick up on this?!

colonoscopy prep

Hi, I have active crohns for over 15 years and everytime I have to go for a colonoscopy my symptoms are so bad I basically sit on the toilet for hours cause if I get up I gotta sit back down.

I can not stand the taste of those drinks you have to drink prior to. I recall back in 2002 when I was hospitalized for loosing a large amount of weight in such a short time that they had given me pills to clean me out, which had the same affect (toilet all night long) I couldnt even finish the dosses they required because I was so weak and couldnt handle it.

If there any kind of prep out there for us who suffer from this disease where it wont be that bad to get through? Especially if your disease is currently flared up? I am besides myself and postponed my test until the end of the year because it makes me so nervous to have to prep for it. That is the worst part of the whole procedure. I love the part of going home.

Your help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards.

Colonoscopy Prep

by Barbara Davis
(Orlando Fl. USA)

I'm having the procedure monday the 18th. Im looking for a over the counter prep that I used about a year ago.

It came with a small pack of lemon- aid type powder to add to the bottle similar to a milk carton but was smaller, I think it was a mini version of what I heard about for colon...prep.

WHERE CAN I FIND THAT? I've tried walmart and walgreens with no luck. And it did not taste bad. and worked great althogh I used 1 fleet enema with it.

In your article "Diet Before Colonoscopy Bowel Preparation" you write that it is OK to eat "broiled fish".

I think it should be "boiled fish".

I swallowed a pillcam 3 weeks ago and after x-ray yesterday it still is lodged in the top of my colon.

My doc doesnt seem too concerened but he says he has never had this happen. My concern is can this thing break open and make me very sick. I am having my normal soft bowel movements and have not had any pain.

I am on Pentasa, Imuran, Entocort and have just had my 2nd infusion of Remicade.
