Acid Reflux Symptoms. Do You Get Them? Do You Know Them?

Acid reflux symptoms. Best way to deal with symptoms acid reflux.

Symptoms of acid reflux can seem like agony at times.

They can become your worst nightmare. They keep you up at night. But what are those acid reflux symptoms? And the better question would be is there such thing as acid reflux disease?

Acid reflux is often referred as GERD, or gastro esophageal reflux disease. It is considered as a chronic condition. Chronic condition means lasting condition. But does it have to be chronic?

I am a conventionally trained pharmacist that doesn’t think only conventional medicine. I am the type of a person that always needs to get to the root of the problem. Traditional or conventional medicine looks at GERD or acid reflux disease as a symptom. And the treatment is the relieving the symptom.

But I also like to learn what causes the problem and if it is possible to take care of the underlined problem.

Most patients have occasional heartburn. But when the heartburn occurs two or more days a week, it is called GERD. This is according to traditional medicine. Acid reflux disease symptoms can lead to more serious health problems. But it is considered treatable.

The mechanism of acid reflux:

Once the stomach senses food, it makes acid called gastrin. Gastrin is responsible for secretion of HCL (hydrochloric acid). Gastrin is also responsible for contraction of muscles in the stomach to move food contents. The job of HCL includes converting proteins to certain enzymes for proper digestion as well as prevention of bacterial or fungal overgrowth in the small intestine and more.

When the gastric acid level in the stomach is low, food will not digest properly. That causes fermentation of the undigested food which leads to gassy, bloated feeling. Fermentation acids are the ones that can be corrosive to the digestive organs like the esophagus.

Our stomachs have a protective lining against these acids but the esophagus does not. Sometimes the sphincter muscles become week and don’t close the stomach properly and that causes the acid to flow back up to the esophagus. This causes the symptoms of heartburn.

Acid Reflux Symptoms:

  • Burning in your chest

  • Bad taste in your mouth

  • Repeating abdominal pain

  • Swallowing pain or burning

  • Intestinal gas pains

  • Bad taste in your throat

  • Pain in the throat

  • Swallowing difficulty

  • Belching, burping

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

Truly diagnosed GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) requires conventional medication treatment and follow ups with a physician. The problem is that many patients get misdiagnosed with it. What may seem to you or your doctor as symptoms acid reflux may not in fact be them. Remember, there's always a second opinion for any newly diagnosed condition.

True GERD is a serious condition that needs to be diagnosed with certain tests and labs, etc. Some Crohn’s disease symptoms may present themselves to resemble GERD symptoms.

Acid reflux symptoms can sometimes feel like a serious chest pain. People often panic when it happens. The first thing you should know is how to differentiate between these symptoms. If the pain accompanied with numbness in your hands and feet and shortness of breath it may be more serious than acid reflux. Speak to your doctor as soon as possible if symptoms seem serious.

Symptoms of silent acid reflux may not be the same. They may not present themselves with classic heartburn feeling. The symptoms of silent acid reflux include hoarseness or trouble talking. This happens because the acid flows to the voice box at night. This kind of GERD even occurs in small children. I would look at the dietary change first, before running to get very expensive medications.

Now, I want to get back to my point about treating the disease or treating the underlined problem. The treatment of the disease is with conventional medications. There are many of them on the market and your doctor can make a wise choice for you if you have a TRULY diagnosed GERD (acid reflux disease). But who is going to get to the bottom of the problem if not you? The only person that can really help you is YOU.
